My father was in the US Army CIC at the very end of the Korean War. Among other things he taught history and current affairs to US military brass based in Japan.
According to family lore it was inconceivable that a Private was capable of opening his mouth (no less teach) in a room containing Generals, so they promoted him high enough to magically become intelligible.
